Professor Brian
McAvoy
Brian has been a practising clinician for nearly 50 years, working as a general practitioner, addiction medicine specialist and academic in New Zealand, Australia, Canada and the UK.
About the Author
Trained in Glasgow and Canada, he has had experience in urban, inner-city, rural and remote practices, and in the public and private sectors. He has held Chairs in General Practice and Primary Health Care in New Zealand, Australia and the UK, senior management positions in Health Authorities, Royal Colleges, and Non-Government Organisations, and has been an Adviser to the World Health Organisation.
His perspective spans general practice and primary health care, addiction medicine and academia, with a special interest in evidence-based practice, health inequalities, medical education and workplace bullying. Much of his clinical practice has involved marginalised patients – the last, the least, the lonely and the lost.
Since retiring in 2020, he has been active in the University of the Third Age, is a Compassionate Companion with Auckland's Mercy Hospice, and enjoys travelling, walking, writing and music. He is married with two children, 11 grandchildren and a cat, Monty, and lives in Auckland and Piha.
