"The Last, The Least, The Lonely and The Lost" was launched on 17 September at Time Out bookstore in Mount Eden, Auckland. Over 50 attendees packed into the funky events room above the iconic bookstore.
Professor Bruce Arroll, Director of Auckland University's Goodfellow Continuing Medical Education Unit, welcomed everyone and explained the background to the book and its author, urging everyone to buy two copies - one for themselves and one for their GP!
The author then explained how the book had taken over 68 years to produce. He read a couple of short extracts, one describing his first house call as a trainee GP ("The Jeely Piece") and another reflecting on the changing face of general practice today ("Zoom Doctors").
This was followed by a revealing account from Julie on the vicissitudes of being a writer's wife! The presentations ended with the reading of a powerful poem, "Behind the Door," written by one of Brian's Tasmanian patients, a recovering opioid addict.
Then began the serious business of socialising, storytelling and enjoying the tasty morsels and refreshments which Julie had provided. All in all, a fun afternoon (and some books were also bought)!
